The holidays are a crazy time for families everywhere, and ours is no different!
My husband and I own our own business,
Nickels and Suede and work is busiest for us during the holidays. We also have four active boys, including a newborn. There are so many things competing for our time between school activities, work, church and all of the extra things that come along with Thanksgiving and Christmas, that it’s easy to get overloaded. Despite all the chaos and stress, I believe it’s really important to make time for family and for Christmas traditions. These are the parts of Christmas that I want my boys to remember from their childhood, not the mess and the stress. I try to keep things simple and not go overboard, but one of our family’s favorite traditions is going to the tree farm to cut down our own tree.
This year we went later than I prefer, but we went! There is a cute little tree farm called
Christmas Ranch Tree Farm about a half an hour north of us that we visit every year. We love supporting a local farm and the kids love the hot chocolate, hay bale ride and the occasional Santa sighting. Of course what they love most is getting to use a real saw!

Everyone gets to weigh in on which tree we pick; it’s usually a pretty quick decision because they all look great to my little guys. Any tree will do, we’ll love it just the same!

Last year, we had our oldest son, Easton, make the final cut and pull the tree up to the farm. This year, our second oldest son, Kesler, took a turn. With some cheering and encouragement, he mustered up the strength to do it. He pulled that pokey little tree all the way up to the barn and his sense of accomplishment was tangible. “We have such strong boys!” my husband and I repeated over and over.

Our youngest son, Baker, and I did our best to dress properly for tree hunting. I decked us both in plaid and just the right shoes, he in his moccasins and I in my outdoorsy boots. My
TruWALKzero Cupsole Fur Booties were just the right lightweight, waterproof boot for tree hunting. I swapped out their original laces for some red ones, which not only made the boots my own, they added a festive pop of red as well. These casual boots are waterproof, comfortable and stylish – and as a mom of boys, those things make any outing better!
All in all it was the perfect afternoon out for our little family of six (which suddenly doesn’t sound so little anymore!). It was so fun to share this tradition with our boys. I’m not sure I’ll ever get a fake tree because I just love going to the farm so much!
We arrived home to work, homework and soon had a holiday party to rush off to. For a few hours though, we were able to focus on one of the most important parts of the season, our family.
